How to wash clip-in hair extensions?
09 July, 2020

As a woman, there’s nothing that makes you feel more beautiful than a look that’s flawless from top to bottom. I’m talk about makeup on point, new shoes, an edgy outfit, and of course — long, gorgeous locks! Now, because of genetics, not all of us are born with gorgeous, naturally long hair that looks out of a magazine, or perhaps we went through a bad breakup and cut it off (girl, we’ve all been there).

But no matter the reason, that’s what human hair extensions are for! They help to enhance our beauty and confidence all the while looking flawlessly natural in the process.

Step 1: Brush them

Before washing your hair extensions, it’s crucial to brush them to minimize the possibility of getting them all tangled up. Start brushing gently with a wide-tooth comb or a soft-bristle brush, and go from bottom to top to remove any tough knots without pulling the hair out. Afterwards, place your wefts on top of each other in a bundle to make sure they do not tangle with the clips.

Step 2: Add shampoo into your sink

Next, fill a sink or bucket with warm water. It is extremely important on this step that you don’t use hot water, as this can damage extensions and cause them to wear away easier and appear more dull. Make sure the water isn’t cold either, as this will not properly cleanse the oils and dirt away.

Prepare your sink by cleaning them before washing your hair extensions, then plug the drain and fill it up with lukewarm water. Add about 2-3 pumps of moisturizing, alcohol-free, sulfate-free, and coloured hair-friendly shampoo into the sink.

Step 3: Apply shampoo and conditioner to every weft

Apply shampoo to your hair extensions. Hold the weft at the top, submerge it into the water, and gently wash the hair with light strokes. Prevent them from tangling up and handle them gently. Set each weft aside neatly on a towel and repeat the process for every weft.

Once all the wefts have been shampooed, condition them from top to bottom. Leave the hair product on for about 5-10 minutes, then rinse them out thoroughly.

Step 4: Use a hair mask

Use conditioner every time you wash your clip in extensions – it’s a complete must-have.  Leave the conditioner in the hair for 3-5 minutes for best results. Choose a gentle conditioner that’s suitable for human hair extensions.

Treat your hair to a moisturising mask ever 10-15 washes. If you regularly heat-style your extensions then use a mask more often – after every 7-10 washes.

Top tip! Extensions feeling especially dry? Apply your usual conditioner and then pop the extensions into a shower cap or clean plastic bag – this helps concentrate the conditioner for softer, more strokeable extensions.

Step 5: Rinse them out

Rinse each weft out and make sure there is no slippery, soft feeling after conditioning. Remember, left-on products on your hair extensions can weigh them down and make them greasy when dried. Use cold water to seal in the moisture and make them softer, silkier, and shinier.

Step 6: Let them air-dry

And lastly, allow your hair extensions to air dry instead of blow drying or towel drying. Blow-drying and towel drying can cause damage and can dry out your extensions — which we definitely don’t want! Use clothes pins to hang them on a clothing hanger so they can dry sitting straight up.

Conclusion

Clip-in hair extensions give you the freedom to get your desired look instantly. Protect them from damage and help them last longer by giving them the care and attention they need and making sure to follow the steps mentioned in this guide. This way, you can not only ensure they are clean; you can also restore their moisture and shine.
